In this small lesson, I will teach and share a compositional template for composing an effective hip–hop piece for a rhythm section that includes piano/keyboard, bass guitar/any bass instrument, and drums.
This should serve as a template for you to use with your chord progressions and melodies. Hip-hop composition often thrives on simplicity and groove. The rhythmic interplay between the instruments is key—each part should complement the others without overcrowding the texture.
The drums and bass drive the piece, so we should focus on creating a strong rhythmic foundation. The piano or keyboard can alternate between providing harmonic support and adding melodic embellishments.
